The “Minority Majority” Factor
Leicester’s South Asian community is not just present — it is the prevailing culture of the city. With over 34% of the population identifying as Asian, the city has the infrastructure to support large-scale Asian weddings, including multiple purpose-built venues, halal and vegetarian caterers, and community institutions that have served the area for generations.
What that means for mehndi: Leicester brides are part of a community where South Asian traditions are deeply embedded and visible. We see strong preferences for traditional designs — Indian and Gujarati brides often want lighter coverage with mandala-centred palms and fine floral work, while Bangladeshi brides request Sylheti-rooted negative space patterns. The city’s “minority majority” status means there is a wealth of local knowledge about what “proper” bridal mehndi should look like, and we work closely with families to honour those expectations.
The Demographics, Up Close
Sources: ONS Census 2021, Leicester City Council
In areas like Belgrave, Rushey Mead, and Spinney Hills, the South Asian population forms a clear majority, with the Golden Mile along Belgrave Road serving as one of the UK’s most famous cultural hubs for Asian bridalwear, jewellery, and wedding preparations.
Three Communities, Three Design Approaches
Indian (Gujarati, Punjabi, South Indian) brides — the largest South Asian group in Leicester at 86,443, forming 22.3% of the total population. Gujarati brides often want lighter coverage with mandala-centred palms, fine floral work, and religious motifs. Punjabi brides lean toward bolder patterns with more coverage. South Indian brides request full extended patterns with fine religious motifs. The strong Gujarati presence in Leicester means we see many requests for designs incorporating the Swastika and Om symbols.
Pakistani and Mirpuri brides — 8,876 residents, a substantial community. Requests lean traditional: bold jaal patterns, geometric symmetry, dense coverage.
Bangladeshi brides — 7,055 residents, a significant and concentrated community. Requests tend toward finer floral-vine work and Sylheti-rooted negative space patterns, lighter and more delicate than Pakistani bridal work.

Questions Leicester Brides Actually Ask
“My family has been in Leicester for generations — what’s the right design?”
Leicester’s South Asian community has deep roots, with many families arriving over several decades. Families who’ve been here for generations often want traditional designs that connect to their heritage. We work from reference photos and family traditions.
“What’s the biggest venue in Leicester?”
Mattioli Arena accommodates up to 3,000 standing — the largest event space in Leicester. Athena Leicester accommodates up to 1,400 standing. Leicester Racecourse’s Kube accommodates up to 550 seated banquet guests.
“Can the venues handle halal or vegetarian catering?”
Athena Leicester allows external Asian and Halal caterers with full flexibility. Leicester Racecourse operates on a self-hire model, letting you bring your own preferred caterers, which is a practical advantage for South Asian weddings. Devonshire Place offers private catering allowed with segregated dining options.
“My fiancé’s family is from India, mine from Bangladesh — how does that work with mehndi?”
We design elements from both traditions. Leicester’s diverse South Asian community — with Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani populations — means we handle this regularly.
“We want a historic venue — what are the best options?”
Athena Leicester is a 1930s Art Deco venue with genuine architectural character. The City Rooms is a Grade I listed Georgian venue. Devonshire Place is a Grade II listed building with over 20 years of Asian wedding experience.
“My family is flying in from abroad — what venues have accommodation?”
St Martin’s House has 28 luxury guest rooms on-site. The City Rooms has boutique en-suite bedrooms. Leicester Racecourse has no on-site accommodation but is a short drive from city hotels.
